Judo Australia names new General Manager to drive participation

Judo Australia has announced the appointment of Gareth Watkins as its new General Manager of Participation.
With senior management experience across financial technology, government programs and a number of sporting organisations, Watkins will provide operational leadership across the organisation, ensure alignment with key strategic priorities and oversee the implementation of Judo Australia’s strategic plan.
A key focus over the next 18 months will be the successful delivery of the PlayWell Strategy, aimed at increasing participation, strengthening sport capability, and deepening community engagement with Judo across Australia.
Announcing the appointment, Judo Australia Chair, Simon Read stated “we are delighted to welcome Gareth as our new General Manager of Participation. His leadership across sport, government programs, and commercial environments presents an exciting opportunity for Judo Australia.
"Gareth’s proven ability to deliver high-impact strategic and operational initiatives will be instrumental in implementing our Participation Plan and expanding the sport’s reach throughout Australian communities.”
Enthusiastic about joining the organisation, Watkins advised “I’m truly honoured to take on this role and to work with the Board, staff, and the wider Judo community to grow and strengthen the sport at every level.
"I look forward to collaborating with our state organisations, clubs, members, and volunteers to ensure Judo remains inclusive, engaging, and sustainable into the future. Like all sports, we face challenges and opportunities, and I’m committed to finding innovative ways to grow Judo and make the complex simple.”
Ward took up his new role as of yesterday (Monday 14th July).
